Monday June 1st, 2020

Hmmm, June 1st and we’re still under extreme conditions due to the virus, even though there has been some welcome easing of restrictions it’s far fom normal. My concern, having read a few newspaper reports recently who have interviewed scientists and SAGE members who are unhappy with the easing, is that we’re setting ourselves up for a second wave in July and possibly a peak in deaths in August. It’s frustrating reading the comments on social media from people who think the lockdown was extreme and unnecessary because “we never needed the nightingale hospitals anyway so it wasn’t that bad”. The reason we didn’t need them is because of the lockdown. We do have, unquestionably, the worst death rate in Europe and that is absolutely due to 2 weeks of dithering when things started to look dodgy instead of locking us down earlier in march. We may not have been emerging frmo lockdown until now anyway but we may have saved 20,000 deaths. The ONS statistics for “additional deaths” make stark reading. It’s been a frightening period and I really don’t think we can afford to drop our guard just yet – the worst could easily be still to come.

Milkman came this morning as usual and brought eggs. The packaging made me giggle.

After breakfast I settled down to complete some applications – I got 4 done in total, 1 I am really interested in as it is part of a consultancy team, 1 in a local school (which took an absolute age to complete the application for), and a couple of others. Fingers crossed.

Out with the dog after lunch, just me and the girls. “S” had spent the morning reorganising our bedroom and wanted to get it finished. It was really hot today – it felt hotter than yesterady although that could be because I had spent the morning inside at the computer instead of being outside. We were also considerably later on the walk – we were out mid-morning yesterday and today it was early afternoon.

Game time pretty much as soon as we got back – Cluedo today. I got a surprise phone call as we were starting to play the game offering me a job (the one I was disappointed with the interview for last week so it just goes to show). I need to think about my salary expectations and do some research so I can submit a reasonable proposal for what I expect then when they reply with the full details of the package we need to work out if it is worth it. Tomorrow morning I finally have my interview for Supply work here in Stirling so I’ll be able to work out what I could earn just doing that for a while but this job is certainly interesting. Not saying any more just yet, we’ll see how the conversations go tomorrow. If nothing else, it’s a real confidence boost to know i’ve got an offer – it’s been really stressful as so many jobs are putting off recruitment or final decision making until after the post-COVID situation seems clearer.

It’s now time for me to get on with dinner – meat free Monday so we’re having fritata with green veg and cheesy bread. It’s a BBC recipe that I haven’t made before.

Monday night is another of our FilmClub nights and today we’ll be watching Journey’s End.

Excellent film, we studied the play for my English Literature O Level and I’ve loved it since. This film really does do it justice. There’s nothing glamorous about the war in this film, it focusses on the destruction in causes to the mental state of the men who fought. It’s outstanding.
